We now proudly present our song about war, written in 1987 and reorchestrated in 2021.
The music video commemorates the victims of the Yugoslav Wars that raged for 10 years (1991-2001).
The story begins in 1986: Mira, 16, and Ratko, 18, fall in love and enjoy life in Dubrovnik, on the Yugoslavian seaside. The war breaks out in 1991, and on the day after their wedding, Ratko is enlisted in the army. It is tough to say goodbye. Mira is walking the empty streets of the town on her own every night. She spends days sitting among the ruins of the bomb-hit church where they were wed, thinking about Ratko in battle. Ratko is injured, and even though his mates rescue him from the frontline, he dies of his injuries. Mira is given the tragic news on the day of their wedding anniversary. For weeks, she is wandering on the seaside thinking about her dead sweetheart. As she is watching the waves at sunset, memories of the two of them together come flooding back. It is difficult, but she must stay strong and go on with her life – she must tell her story so that people can understand how much better life would be without wars.
Curiosity about the clip:
0:28 – Skradinski Buk falls. Krka National Park lies about 10km inland from Sibenik in this part of Dalmatia. Named after the Krka River, the Park covers an area of just over 142 square km and includes two-thirds of the river itself. The top attraction of the Park is its magnificent waterfalls, including the famous Skradinski Buk falls which are one of Croatia’s most famous sights.
0:50 and 2:09 – Dubrovnik. George Bernard Shaw was enchanted by this beautiful city, about which he said “those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik”, as well as, famously, describing it as “the pearl of the Adriatic”. It really is a stunning city with an amazing Old Town, which became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.
2:13 – Grand Hotel. The centrepiece of the resort was the opulent Grand Hotel, constructed in 1919, with other hotels – including the Kupari, Goričina, Goričine II, Galeb and the Pelegrin – built between the 1960s and 1980s.
When the Pelgrin Hotel opened in 1963, it was the biggest in terms of size and capacity on the Adriatic Coast, while Kupari also had a nearby campsite with room for 4,000 people and multiple villas, one of which belonged to Yugoslavian leader Josip Broz Tito.
The military largely bankrolled the expansion of the resort – and so inevitably it became an enclave for officers and their friends and families.
When war broke out the Yugoslav People’s Army (also known as the JNA) ended up, ironically, bombing their holiday project in an attempt to flush out Croatian soldiers.
2:40 – Three Bells in Dubrovnik
The names of the characters may seem to be the work of chance, but they are not.
Mira means Peace, and the name Ratko means Warrior.
Our favourite place. Trogir is about 38 miles from Sibenik and only 17 miles from Split, and has a population of just over 10,000. Trogir was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997 and is home to a number of fascinating historic sights, the best of which is the Cathedral of St Lawrence. Its proximity to Split Airport also means that Trogir is very easy to reach.
